About a month ago, high school Senior,...

Modern Diet - Rip Tide

About a month ago, high school Senior, Jake Cheriff, introduced me to his solo project under the moniker Modern Diet. His smooth, yet more so distinctive voice sets the tone of the track, perfectly weaving in and out through ear catching harmonies. The professionalism here is real and it’s incredible he’s doing it by himself.

Cheriff explains his intention, “…capturing the soul which gives life to older tunes, while simultaneously utilizing technology that sonically enhances more contemporary music.” As an aspiring studio engineer, he’s very much ahead of the game.

His debut single, Rip Tide, is packed with echos and unmistakeable hooks. Whether it be the crisp electronic nodes connecting each layer of sound or his fluctuating, energy soaked vocals, the catchiness is contagious.

There’s no doubt that we will be hearing more tunes from Modern Diet, soon enough. Drop by his bandcamp and pick up his single, free. In June 2006, The Star Department...

The Star Department - Antlers

In June 2006, The Star Department released their debut EP to much critical acclaim over Ireland, Spain and the US. They also even had an unreleased mini-album titled “Auditions.” After taking a hiatus and changing around their line up, 2010 - 2011 saw the band take tours in the US and Canada, including shows at CMJ and NXNE. Despite having a hit, ‘Embers,’ these Dublin folks have never crossed my ears until today.

However, not much of their old music can be found on the internets these days. No shame, tho. They’ll be releasing their second debut album?, The Pea Green Boat, later this year!

Their serene acoustic pop track ’Antlers’ is the first cut from the new album, mixed by David Brewis from Field Music. These warm-toned sounds linger in the air. They sway me in the way dandelions move with the wind in a grassy meadow. Watching the sunset above us as we lay there, care free.

Moon Bounce - Telephone
It was a real treat to receive Corey...

Moon Bounce - Telephone

It was a real treat to receive Corey Regensburg’s new track in my inbox last night, along with his homegrown accompanying video. Like most of his sounds, it’s got that sharp acoustic intrumental feel with a serge of harsh electronic samples behind the pitchy/looped broken up vocals. There’s just so much going for me on this track right now.

And the video? Boy. Erratic dancing with styled camera work = some pretty bang-up stuff. You can never go wrong with something like that.

Corey’s currently working on a new LP, still yet to be titled, due sometime this Spring. Pick up this single free over at his sndcld.

Teen Daze - “Brooklyn Sunburn” | off upcoming LP

Vancouverite,...

Teen Daze - “Brooklyn Sunburn” | off upcoming LP

Vancouverite, Teen Daze is in the works of his first full-length LP which will be titled: All Of Us, Together. He fell upon a book, that is the whole inspiration for this latest effort. It seems that his creative mind is always spinning with incredible new ideas and concepts for various projects. So, it’s no surprise whenever we see a glimpse of something he’s crafted.

“I came upon an old book at a thrift store called Utopian Visions, an encyclopedic volume of different views on what utopia might look like, which became a huge inspiration… I wanted to make a record that sounded more synthetic but also inviting—this is futuristic music with a heart,” he recently told FADER.

“Brooklyn Sunburn” is delectably simple, yet has a powerful vivacious groove. And of course the record wouldn’t be complete without the featured, persuading airy vocals of Steffaloo. All Of Us, Together drops on May 22nd @ Lefse.

So psyched FMLY FEST 2012 will be right here in New York!
Porcelain Raft’s sounds and parts of his new record have been floating around the internet waves for the past few weeks. But the long awaited arrival of his full Debut Record is finally here. It’s pretty hard to classify his music in a single genre, but I think it’s safe to say that Mauro Remidi’s sound is one-of-a-kind. After reading up a little bit more on the man’s life/experiences, it’s clear where is diverse elements are zoning in from.

Strange Weekend might have been made in a Brooklyn basement but it is huge dream-pop nonetheless, with falsettos and synths bursting out in all directions. You can stream this whole beaut over at his facebook page. Or lend Porcelain Raft your support, go out and get your copy here.

Oh, did I mention Strange Weekend is available in white vinyl?! Look at that pretty little thing, better pick one up before they all sell.

More recently, earlier this morning The Fader premiered his new self-directed video (above) for his track Unless You Speak From Your Heart. The hazed out, fast motion, starry-eyed footage is something you’ll wanna latch your eyes on. Watch more of his delectable videos here on his vimeo page.

PREMIERE: The Jealous Sound - A Gentle Reminder | Sophomore...

PREMIERE: The Jealous Sound - A Gentle Reminder | Sophomore full-length

Track: This Is Where It Starts

It’s been nine years since their debut LP, and The Jealous Sound has emerged with their sophomore full-length A Gentle Reminder, to be released January 31st via Music is Subjective and Fontana Distribution. In accordance with their big release, the band will also be hitting the road for a national tour this February, including stops in Austin, Boston, Brooklyn, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

The band has a knack for that Americana-Rock sound they play so well. Like their last album, they’ve got a solid set of rock songs here that hovers somewhere around open-hearted to emotional triumph. A Gentle Reminder is built upon life experiences, lessons, and includes a lot of emotional baggage that’ll trigger your nostalgia. Although, their sound is quite the opposite of gentle as it pushes cascading guitars, thundering rhythms and the band’s evocative lyrics into a 10-track epiphany.

The album was made in the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 with producer John Lousteau, as Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen) contributes backing vocals and bass on two of the tracks. The album is up for streaming over here until Tuesday the 31st at midnight! A preorder the album on CD and LP will also be available soon. Wolves. yeah.

Corduroi - Emerald Rain

Emerald Rain is the third track...

Corduroi - Emerald Rain

Emerald Rain is the third track from Corduroi’s second upcoming EP Future Adventures, out February 14th (Valentine’s Day) on Mush Records. These new sounds are slightly more sophisticated and go further in depth in regard to his previous electronic compositions. It’s nothing like Corduroi has produced before. One reason may be because this track, along with one other on the upcoming EP, was co-produced by Austin producer Galapagos. Either way, his music has grown.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Texas native that is Cody Wilson (Corduroi), it’s not to late to study up before the release of his upcoming EP. Corduroi sprung in 2005, sampling live instruments through his computer’s microphone and playing with anything he could get his hands on including guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel, toy piano, accordion, and trumpet. Since then, his experimental sounds have evolved maturely. I can’t wait to hear the full album and experience his new musical explorations.

Read more about Future Adventures here if you care to do so and get ready for its arrival over at his Bndcmp.

A Place to Bury Strangers - So Far Away

We all probably knew that this was bound to happen. An Instagram stop motion picture music video. Crazy pics of ppl and landscapes, what more would this be? Very well executed if I may say.

yvynyl:

You knew that it’s going to get trendy to make a music video entirely out of Hipstamatic/Instagram pics - so better get it while it’s hot. This one by band member Oliver Ackermann is extremely well done and it helps that he was privvy to ‘life on the road, etc’ to capture all these great shots.

Onwards To the Wall LP will be out on Dead Oceans February 7th. Catch ‘em on tour w Joy Formidable ‘round the US this winter.

The nimble blend of these washed out vocals and whiney guitar take me to a the scene of an old time movie, oddly on the countryside. Filled with reverb and shoegaze that’s just so tasteful. Great, great find.

Nothing is known about these Pennsylvania guitar pop merchants, aside from the fact that ‘Riptide Lore’ was put up on bandcamp as a means of “snagging” the band name (and it’s a sweet band name, I agree). The song itself is the vital ingredient for a perfect day; gorgeous guitar lines shift in and out of tune mercilessly, as hushed vocals swelter in the background. Now excuse me as I take to the slopes with this playing in my ears (note: I’ve never been skiing. I would probably prefer skydiving).

Some new things are coming your way. The first is the re-launch of The Record Stack! A total full-fledged website redesign with some really sweet new features. One thing you may notice immediately is the new domain name: therecordstack.net. Yes, TRS has finally grown up out of the standard Tumblr url!

After many months of coding, creating, and planning, the new layout is finally here and just in time for the start of the new year! I’ve spent countless hours working on the website but it was worth every single one. I owe it to y’all. The site was definitely in need of a major facelift.

In addition, I felt that it was time to retire the old banner. My dear friend Ana was nice enough to take on the task of creating a new banner for the site. She did a pretty amazing job! It really does pull everything together.

When I was first deciding how to go about this renovation, I knew there were some things I really needed to implement to make your experience better. Below is a list of features that are new to the site!

New Features
- Full website re-design
- New Domian name (therecordstack.net!)
- New Banner
- New Navigation Tabs underneath header
- Newly refined searchbar
- A Featured box in the sidebar, showcasing outstanding artists
- Newly revised music suggestion form
- New Javascript powered “Currently Spinning”
- Facebook and Twitter share buttons on the bottom of each post
- Comment Box on every permalink page, powered by DISQUS
- Jump Pagination (You can now skip back to past posts more efficiently!)
- Addition: Footer
- Addition: Streampad bar (stream all audio posts on The Record Stack!)

So go ahead! Peruse the site at your own leisure and feel free to email me with feedback - what you like, what you don’t like, and what else I should add! By doing this, it makes your experience here a better one. I can’t thank you enough - new and old supporters who haven’t left during my recent hiatus. Take part in this new interactive experience. I hope you enjoy the fully functional interface and make the best out of it.

This is only the beginning of new and exciting things to come. Stay tuned as you’ll be seeing some really great new projects and such in the near future!

The Record Stack is still in the process of updating and will be throughout the next few weeks in order get the site back up to date. Please bear with me!

Note: The site is currently only fully supported by Safari and Google Chrome. It will be working properly on Firefox and Internet Explorer soon!

Day Joy - New Ordinary 7”

Right from the sunny shores of Orlando, Florida lay duo Day Joy, brought to life by the minds of Michael Serrin and Peter Michael Perceval. Serrin is part of the former Introduction to Sunshine, now called Saskatchewan. The new outfit has come into the game at an ironic time, during winter, as they seem to be creating some summer filled sounds. Although, in their defense, Florida doesn’t have much of a ‘Winter’ to begin with. But I digress. The ambient percussion fills the background noise as wistful vocals glide amongst light-hearted tones that are delicately strung.

Peter writes: “Michael and I… recorded most of our tracks in my living room switching off instruments between the two of us and using a pretty simple setup of some condensors and SM57’s. All of the songs have developed into very lush and layered recordings but they started with just the two of us on a porch writing together.” The process of creating such wondrous art using only a sparse amount of supplies that are at hand will always amaze me.

These two tracks are just a glimpse of what’s to come. Look out for their new material in the form of an EP/7” later this Winter with the release of their full album ‘round Spring time.

If I had any change, I would surely lay it down on...

If I had any change, I would surely lay it down on this preeminent project. The fact that I’m broke, means the least I can do is help to get the word out and about. I love what’s happened here.

crashsymbols:

In case you hadn’t heard, yesterday we murdered Get Off The Coast in cold blood and pulled from it’s seeping wound the first inklings of Decoder, and today we bring you the magazine version. Like so many of our friends and peers, we’ve decided to use Kickstarter to initially fund the project. Decoder will begin as a semi-annual publication, with a new issue coming every 6 months. We aim to be more than just a source of music; featuring tons of artwork, culture pieces, and even a few short stories. We’ve lined up contributions from Henning Lahmann (NFOP), Michael McGregor (The Report), Claire Pestaille, Malachi Ward, an interview with DJ Quikfrom Peter Marrack and so much more. Dwight, Liz and I have worked for the better part of 2011 on this project, making it very much a labor of love. We’ve had contributors drop in and out (and we anticipate that may continue to happen), but we’re wickedly proud of where we’ve gotten, and now we just need your help to really make this thing happen. So go ahead and pop on over to the Kickstarter page, mosey around, check out the contributors, and if you feel so inclined throw us a donation for whatever you feel comfortable with. We’ve got a few incentives up now and will be adding more in the coming weeks. While you’re browsing give a listen to the first Decoder mixtape, twenty tracks that can downloaded with just a $1 donation.

Track: “Wings Wont Behave”

“Whistle Peak is pop music in disguise and experimentation at its core.” If you looking for a small journey through different portals that lead you to places you’ve always dreamed of visiting, this album is the one. It’s clearly evident that each track has been carefully ordered and transitions were specifically picked, simply making the journey of your imagination slide gracefully bye.

Whistle Peak’s style of folk, is original in that it blends acoustic instrumentation with twinkling, hypnotic sounds forming songs of love & loss and joy & darkness. With each listen, you’re pulled closer and surprising small amulets layered beneath continuous melody fill your mind. Enter a world where nature rules and men and women are entranced in dream-filled slumber.

It’s pretty hard to only listen to one song off the album. I suggest you take part in the full journey and listen all the way thru when it comes to digital mp3, CD, and teal-colored LP on Feb. 14th, 2012.

Highly recommended you listen to this with some quality headphones

Peanut Butter Lovesicle - Black Eyed Blues

This blues infused, fuzzed out, dirty rock ‘n rock single has an awesome hazy yet professional video to go along with it.

Brooklyn trio Peanut Butter Lovesicle released their single ‘Black Eyed Blues’ back in August, however it’s now making the rounds again thanks to the new rad official video! It features cameos from Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick and Sports Illustrated model Julie Henderson. I’m betting these guys have a kick-ass live show… Directed by Evil Twin - Todd DiCiurcio & Taylor Steele.

PBL are set to release a new EP in March, so keep yourself updated with their whereabouts and other notable links on their website.

Farewell Republic - Debut LP "Burn the Boats"

This raw, cinematic grunge, brooklyn-bound sound is incredible. The album has a wide range of influences: from art-rock and ambient electronic music to 20th century classical and traditional middle eastern folk.

They recorded their previous EP, Bridges, with Grammy winning producer/engineer Gus Oberg (The Strokes, Willie Nelson) before they were of legal drinking age. Now that’s pretty damn cool. Farewell Republic brings life to the streets of New York with their intense guitar shredding and punk drowned vocals. Their self-produced debut LP, Burn the Boats is due out on February 21st (which I think will be released thru their Bandcamp, though that’s not confirmed.)

Well, as much as I...

Of Montreal - “Wintered Debts”

Well, as much as I don’t want to think about it, winter’s on its way. Of Montreal are here with an unexpected brand new song titled, “Wintered Debts.” From their upcoming album, Paralyptic Stalk , this song is over seven minutes long. It starts off as vocal-distinct upbeat collective catchy-pop and dwindles into a snowy spiral of melodic piano, sheer violin and reverb drenched vocals. But then comes back around and ends with a simple touch of piano mimicking the awakened vocals as the song tappers off into the dark snowy scene. Every part of the song is filled with bizarre compilations of different tunes that Of Montreal made extraordinary.

This little sample, or should I say long?, track has got me wondering about all of the special things this new record may hold. Paralyptic Stalk will be available next year under Illinois’ Polyvinyl Records.

Black Twig - Death Scene

Over the past few months Black Twig has increasingly been making superb progress in the music scene. They’re back again, givin’ us a raw taste of their forthcoming debut album Paper Trees, with their song entitled “Death Scene.” This three-and-a-half-minute tune is filled with all of the noise-pop one desires. Their improved rugged 90s guitar pop with contradicting mellow type vocals, gives way to a new generation of garage-pop. Handing the baton over to bands like the Black Twigs, as they get a chance to make their own mark.

Black Twig’s Paper Trees will be available at your fingertips, through Soliti on January 11th, 2012.

Mirror Talk - Down and Out

This song has just got that...

Mirror Talk - Down and Out

This song has just got that fantastic groove and vocals that sound so familiar. The funky synth progression is like a glisten in the moonlight and it feels as if the songs power is being reigned in yet not so much that you’re still able to capture the thrill of the night. I think Jimmy puts it pretty well, this track does paints a picture and that picture is clear.

headunderwater:

I may be way out of line on this but I’m just gonna say it. The first thing that came to mind when I heard this track from this LA group was this is what it would sound like if Small Black brought a Prince vibe coupled with a post-break-regret-80s-movie-montage. You know, that 80s split screen following contrasting characters walking down darkened street lit by intermittent overhead lights, one’s crying and the other is kicking over every aluminum trash can in sight then prompting readjusting their jean jacket.

Not much is known about this recent London group. They’ve writen up only a short few sentences about themselves, “5-piece band. Guitars and drums and bass and keys and some singing. We write pop songs.” And that’s all we’re left with. Though, not surprisingly, I kinda like it like that. Nothing far to read into, just the band and their music.

Their debut track, “Never Never” has got a twangy groove backed with powerful yet oh so calming vocals. I really hope these folks make more music, soon.
